What do you expect your tomorrow to be? Youth looks ahead to being grown up. Young people dream of being movie stars or professional athletics or Olympic champions. Most Americans are at heart optimistic people. We hope for and we work towards providing a better life for our children. The song “I Believe” for every drop of rain that falls a flower grows is a great example of looking past the current situation and hoping, even expecting a better future. The lyrics to the song “Over the Rainbow” are full of hopes and dreams and looking forward.

Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high

And the dreams that you dream of once in a lullaby, oh

Somewhere over the rainbow, blue birds fly

And the dreams that you dream of, dreams really do come true, ooh

Someday I’ll wish upon a star

Wake up where the clouds are far behind me

Where trouble melts like lemon drops

High above the chimney top

That’s where you’ll find me, oh

Somewhere over the rainbow, bluebirds fly

And the dream that you dare to, oh

Why, oh why can’t I?

In the midst of a political season what are candidates, what are the parties looking forward to. One party looks forward to a rapidly growing stock market while the other looks forward to a burgeoning and expanding middle class. A growing stock market enhances the wealth of the already well to do but does nothing for the working class, the teachers, the nurses, the people we have recently denoted as “essential.” One party tries to define itself as protecting constitutional rights while the other works to protect human rights. One party believes no one is free unless everyone is free. Perhaps FDR said it best. “The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much it is whether we provide enough for those who have little.” This is not just about wealth but dignity, safety, education, justice and especially hope. We need to give hope to those who are discriminated against. We need to give hope to those who have been denied justice. We need to give hope to all those not born into a wealthy educated family.

Only one of our two major parties promote those goals, those beliefs. I find it encouraging that our teens and young adults today seem to be rejecting material gain as motivation but are looking forward to live meaningful lives and making meaningful contributions to society. Our “essential people” our teachers and nurses and the working class have been setting excellent examples. The myriads of Americans showing the willingness to wear masks and socially distance to help our country recover from the pandemic. While the President has set a terrible example and wants only a return of a growing stock market at any cost, the overwhelming majority of Americans have been doing their part for a healthier future. They have hope. Betsy Devos, Secretary of Education for Trump said earlier this week it should “the rule” for children to return to full time school this fall. The rule should be that our children’s health comes first and return to school only if their health can be guaranteed. Our hope for the future going forward requires the protection of our children, not in sacrificing them for an economic gain. One party provides hope going forward, the other seems more like the grim reaper.
