On Sunday, June 28, 2020, at 1:15 AM, deputies responded to a residence in the 23700 block of Blackbird Circle in Moreno Valley for a report of multiple subjects involved in a family altercation. During the incident, an estranged family arrived at the location and broke into the residence while threatening to cause harm to the occupants. The occupants confronted the estranged family member who became hostile. During the altercation, a resident used a firearm against the assailant. 

Deputies arrived at the location and found the assailant suffering from a gunshot wound. The subject was transported by paramedics to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The decedent has been identified as 43-year-old Cesar Acosta from Moreno Valley. 

Investigators from the Moreno Valley Station and Central Homicide Unit responded and assumed the investigation. At this point, the shooting appears to have been done in self-defense.
