Riverside looks to fill charter committee

Date:

Riverside is asking the city’s registered voters to apply for a position on its charter review committee.

The 11-member panel examines the document that determines how the city is run and advises the city council on possible changes to it, according to a statement on the city’s website.

“Serving on the charter review committee is one of the highest forms of community service a voter can perform in Riverside,” Mayor Rusty Bailey said in the statement. “We need Riverside residents to step forward and provide meaningful input to a document that is so crucial to the operation of our city.”

Each council member will directly appoint one committee member and Mayor Bailey will appoint two at-large members. Following interviews with the mayor and city council, two more at-large members and two alternates will be selected.

The charter, in effect, is Riverside’s constitution. It determines the number of elected officials, how and when they are elected, and that the city is governed by a council-manager form of government.

Also, the charter provides for the appointment of city officers and several advisory boards and commissions, and it determines the fiscal administration and management of the public utilities department, according to the statement.

Residents interested in serving on the charter committee may apply at www.riversideca.gov/cityclerk or by contacting the city clerk’s office at (951) 826-5557 or at city_clerk @riversideca.gov.
